About us

QRV stems from the passion and expertise of Angelo Moras who has dedicated 30 years to studying different technologies and techniques to bend solid wood.
The QRV project is a fusion of experience and experimentation but above all it is a vision; the vision of a product that comes directly from the forest; a product that, through sheer simplicity, expresses nothing but the richness, mystery and harmony of wood.

In 1998 AM meets Paolo Cogliati, a designer from Milan, who has also been involved for 30 years in research on wood and the creative development of its infinite expressive potential.
QRV takes shape from the passion and collaboration between Angelo and Paolo with the aim of giving life to an authentic natural product, a piece of nature so to say, that has simply been borrowed from those forests and that one day will be returned to nature to become a tree again.

We would like to think of this small MINIMAL catalogue as a tribute to trees.
QRV was established in Vietnam and is set amidst the rolling backdrop of the dunes of Mui Ne that we thought we would bring our products to, so that we could photograph them in the tropical wind, sand and blue sky.
The QRV product, however, is not just to be seen, it must be touched, caressed and experienced. Perhaps through our articles we are able to convey the love and profound respect we have for this magnificent material, as old as time, a faithful companion of man in every experience and activity.
QRV products are intended for residential spaces but they have also been designed to characterise spaces open to the public (restaurants, bars, lounges), indoor and outdoor environments (patios, conservatories, covered outdoor areas that are sheltered from the rain, not as garden furniture ), with their intrinsic naturalness.

Product characteristics

The development of new products starts with experimenting by Curvetta Co. Ltd. Vietnam, a leader in bending solid wood.
The production process is therefore based on the steam bending technology, starting from simple raw boards that are carefully selected and then bent to obtain seatings (benches, stools, chairs, sofas and armchairs) called “Minimal”.

The criteria that we apply to the production process are as follows:

  1. Design based on simplicity, linearity and lightness with the aim of enhancing the properties and characteristics of the material, the resistance and the tension of the curved wood.
  2. Bending of solid wood boards of certified origin
  3. Surface treatment by simple sanding or sandblasting
  4. Finish with lye that we produce from the ashes of our process waste, soap or oil and natural waxes
  5. Matching with local (Vietnamese) materials and processes such as ropes, vegetable fibres, fabrics, bamboo, coloured ribbons and leather.

Materials and finishes

At the moment, we use 4 types of wood within the large European broad-leaved family:

  • Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) trees ranging from 40 to 100 years old.
  • Oak (Quercus robur) trees ranging from 50 to 140 years old.
  • Walnut (Juglans regia) trees ranging from 40 to 140 years old.
  • Cherry (Prunus avium) trees ranging from 40 to 100 years old.

We can say that our pieces of furniture represent the antiques of the future, considering that the trees from which our raw wood originates range from 40 to 150 years old.

The procedure is based on a careful selection of the boards, which is not made on the basis of the conventional “quality” criteria, but according to a logic that in some ways is quite the opposite. Each type of wood can easily be identified given its characteristics, if these are not hidden or counterfeited.
Knots, flame figures and colour differences are not defects for us but each one is an added value to the ability of steam bending.

A coherent ecological awareness arises from the love for the material itself and respect for its authenticity.
If we think of today’s world that is dominated and suffocated by plastic and a consumption that is out of control, the use of wood, depending on its purity, is a symbolic gesture, an ideal reference.
In this sense, the finishes we offer are designed according to the properties of each wood.

Oak and ash are woods with open pores, with strong contrasts between the heartwood and the sapwood, so we decided to bring them to the surface by sandblasting. In this way the differences in shade and hardness are emphasised and hence it is possible to appreciate the textures and designs given by the geometry of the growth rings.
Walnut and Cherry, on the other hand, are woods with closed pores; therefore their surface is smooth and uniform, the natural wax enhances the colour, texture and colour variations of the grain.

Paolo and Angelo find it hard to think of a product in our daily lives that does not contain wood.
Our products are called MINIMAL because we believe that simplicity is a value in itself, a code of beauty and in some ways also a warning to reduce the use of or not use at all anything that is not strictly necessary. No other material can fully express this concept better than wood.

Most of the QRV products are single-component models, that is, they are formed from a single piece of wood. Whereas the few products that are composed of several components have exposed joints or are assembled by means of small metal joints that make the product easy to manage and assemble.

All the constructive solutions are developed in terms of strength and durability that we believe are essential values for any product that has an ecological value in itself. Our creations are numbered, branded and guaranteed for life.
